Summer 2021 Oregon Camping

Travel1 min read

Whew! What a whirlwind tour of Oregon. Drove about 1200 miles in 4 days. Weather was mostly hot and dry; the scenery breathtakingly beautiful. Left Portland on Saturday June 19th at 12:30pm; returned Wednesday June 23rd at 7:30 am.

Orginally planned to return June 26th, the hot weather and cramped camping conditions made me decide to change plans. Prineville Reservoir State Park was a bit of a disappointment. The lake was low; the beach not at all inviting. The campsite was small. Cramped really. And I was surrounded by large families. Not really my style of camping. That said, the boondocking site I stayed near Sisters, OR was amazing. There were neighbors relatively close but the experience was much more tolerable. I think people who boondock understand the need for privacy and quiet. Definitely will camp there again!

Sunday night I stayed at my favorite rest area in Canyonville, OR. Such a great spot for a quick overnight. Monday morning, I discovered a gem of a coffee shop in Myrtle Creek, OR. What a lovely little town. The hills around the town offer great views of the surrounding area.

Monday, I spent most of the day driving the coast hoping to find a bit of sun. While I did indeed find more tolerable temps, the weather was misty and cloudy with frequent spits of rain - from Coos Bay to Newport. By Newport, I gave up and headed inland. Ended up spending the night just outside Portland at the Wilsonville rest area. Also, a convenient place to over night. Not really necessary, but I felt obligated since I told Tim not to expect me until Wednesday. Plus I rather enjoy sleeping in the van!

So now to plan the rest of my vacation. I hope to fill it will visiting friends, eating good food and staying cool!
